Senior Software Engineer – AS400

ROLE PURPOSE

Develop and deliver software applications for external clients by translating business requirements into effective technical solutions.

Collaborate with Product Management and client representatives to gather, analyze, and define technical requirements and solution designs.

Work closely with engineering teams to support software enhancements, application modernization, and implementation of technical changes.

Enable successful client adoption through effective communication, technical guidance, and ongoing production support.

Role Overview

Responsible for the design, development, enhancement, and support of business-critical AS400 applications that meet client and business requirementsActs as a key liaison between Product Management, clients, and engineering teams to ensure alignment on requirements, technical solutions, and delivery outcomesContributes to application modernization, design improvements, performance optimization, and production stability through strong technical expertise and ownershipProvides technical leadership, promotes engineering best practices, and supports continuous improvement initiatives across the software development lifecycle

Key Responsibilities

Analyze, design, develop, test, debug, and maintain AS400 software applications and enhancementsCollaborate with Product Managers, Business Analysts, and stakeholders to define business and technical requirementsParticipate in software design discussions and contribute to architecture, design, and technology decisionsCreate and maintain technical specifications, design documents, and support documentationDevelop, test, and deploy code using AS400 technologies and established development standardsInvestigate, troubleshoot, and resolve production issues while ensuring application stability and performancePerform impact analysis, effort estimation, and technical assessments for development initiativesSupport application modernization and continuous improvement efforts across legacy platformsConduct code reviews and promote software quality, security, and maintainability best practicesCollaborate with global engineering, production support, and client-facing teams to deliver high-quality solutionsTrain and communicate with client-facing teams and stakeholders on system functionality and enhancementsMentor junior engineers and contribute to technical knowledge sharing within the teamPerform other related duties as assigned

Required Skills And Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience7+ years of hands-on IBM AS400 (IBM i / iSeries) development experienceStrong expertise in RPG/RPGLE, Free-Form RPG, SQLRPGLE, CL/CLLE, DB2/400, Batch Processing, DFUs, and Query toolsExperience supporting production environments and resolving complex application issuesKnowledge of IBM i APIs, Data Queues, User Queues, Message Queues (MQ), Multi-threading, Journaling, and IBM i file systemsStrong understanding of software development lifecycle methodologies, including Agile and iterative development approachesExperience with source control systems, code management, and release processesStrong understanding and practical experience with Agile practices, particularly Scrum and KanbanStrong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilitiesExcellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and business teamsExperience with GitHub Copilot, AI-assisted development, or software engineering productivity tools is an advantage

Desirable Skills

Knowledge of application modernization strategies for IBM i/AS400 environmentsExposure to API integration and distributed systemsFamiliarity with DevOps practices and automation frameworksUnderstanding of Agentic AI concepts and practical software engineering applicationsGitHub Copilot certification or equivalent AI tooling experience is advantageous

Role Expectations

Location~ Pune, IndiaWork closely with global engineering, product management, production support, and client services teams to develop, enhance, and support AS400 applicationsParticipate in an agreed on-call or out-of-hours support rotation where required for business-critical production servicesDemonstrate an engineering mindset by driving automation, improving software quality, enhancing application reliability, and treating operational learning as continuous product improvement
