Full job description
## The Opportunity
At a fast-growing company, data is rarely the hardest problem. The harder problem is understanding what the data is actually telling you.
A business can have dashboards, reports, and hundreds of metrics, and still have five different explanations for why performance changed. One team sees a demand problem. Another sees an execution problem. Someone else sees a capacity issue. The founder looks at the same numbers and asks: "But what is actually going on?"
This role exists to answer that question.
We are looking for an exceptional analytical generalist who enjoys taking ambiguous business problems, going deep into data, testing competing hypotheses, finding the underlying pattern, and turning it into a clear insight that helps leadership make better decisions.
You will work closely with the Founder & CEO and senior leadership, across functions and business problems.
This is deliberately not a conventional reporting or BI role.
---
## What You Will Do
Your work will typically move through: Business Question > Data > Analysis > Insight > Decision > Outcome.
You may start with something as simple as: "Why has this metric changed?"
But the real work is figuring out: What actually changed? Where did it change? Is the movement real? What could explain it? Which explanations are supported by evidence? What don't we know? What should we investigate next? What does this mean for the business?
You will work across areas including growth, customers, operations, finance, productivity, unit economics, and strategy. The specific questions will change constantly. That is part of the role.
---
## What Makes This Role Unusual
You will not be handed a neatly defined analytical problem every morning. Some of the most valuable questions will arrive as:
"Something feels wrong with this number."
"Three teams have three different explanations. Which one is right?"
"We're growing, but I'm not sure we're getting better."
Your job will be to turn that ambiguity into a structured investigation. Sometimes you will discover that the original question was wrong. Sometimes the answer will contradict a senior stakeholder's belief. Sometimes the data will not be good enough to answer the question conclusively.
Knowing the difference between Fact, Inference, Hypothesis, and Unknown will be an important part of the job.
---
## Your Core Responsibilities
1. **Solve ambiguous business problems.** Take loosely defined questions and structure them into analytical problems that can actually be investigated.
2. **Diagnose performance.** Identify the underlying drivers behind important business movements rather than simply reporting the movement.
3. **Generate insights.** Find patterns, relationships, exceptions, and opportunities that are not obvious from standard reporting.
4. **Challenge assumptions.** Test prevailing explanations rather than accepting the first plausible narrative, including your own.
5. **Create a common fact base.** Help leadership distinguish between what we know, what we believe, and what we still need to find out.
6. **Translate analysis into business language.** Turn complex analysis into concise conclusions that senior leaders can understand and act upon.
7. **Support important decisions.** As you build context and credibility, increasingly contribute to recommendations, experiments, and decision-making.
8. **Build analytical systems.** Develop reusable frameworks and diagnostic approaches so the organisation becomes progressively less dependent on individual intuition.
---
## What We Are Looking For
We care much more about how you think than what your previous job title was.
You could come from Business Analytics, Data Analytics, Strategy, Consulting, Business Intelligence, Growth, Product, Marketing Analytics, Operations, Revenue Management, Corporate Strategy, Finance, Founder or Chief of Staff roles, or other analytically intensive functions.
You could have worked in Consumer, Technology, SaaS, E-commerce, Q-commerce, Fintech, Edtech, Healthcare, Retail, Manufacturing, Consulting, or something completely different.
Industry experience is not a prerequisite. If you are a strong analytical thinker, we expect you to learn a new business.
---
## The Capabilities That Matter Most
**Analytical reasoning.** You can take a messy problem, break it down, and determine what needs to be understood.
**Data fluency.** You are comfortable working directly with data and can independently investigate a problem using tools such as Excel/Sheets, SQL, BI tools, or equivalent. You do not need to be a data engineer. You do need to be able to go behind a dashboard when the question requires it.
**Business judgment.** You understand that analysis is valuable only when it improves understanding or decisions. You naturally ask: "So what?"
**Intellectual independence.** You are willing to challenge an attractive explanation when the evidence does not support it.
**Intellectual honesty.** You are comfortable saying "I don't know yet" and equally comfortable saying "I was wrong."
**Communication.** You can take something complicated and explain it simply.
---
## What This Role Is NOT
This is not primarily a MIS role, reporting role, dashboard-building role, Tableau administration role, data engineering role, or data-entry role. We are not looking for someone whose main contribution is producing more reports.
If your proudest accomplishment is "I built 30 dashboards," this may not be the right fit.
If your proudest accomplishment is "I discovered why a major business metric was deteriorating, changed management's understanding of the problem, and influenced the intervention," we want to meet you.
---
## Tools
You should be comfortable with analytical tools such as Excel/Google Sheets, SQL or equivalent, and Tableau/Power BI/Looker or similar BI platforms. Python, statistics, and experimentation capabilities are useful additions.
But we will not hire you because you know a particular tool. Tools can be learned. Analytical judgment is harder to teach.
---
## Experience
Typically 5 to 10 years of relevant experience. But we are deliberately not making years, title, or industry rigid filters. If you have spent fewer years solving unusually difficult analytical problems, we would rather hear from you than automatically reject you. Likewise, ten years of reporting experience is not necessarily more relevant than five years of genuine business analytics.
---
## What Success Looks Like
**First 90 days.** You understand the business, data ecosystem, and major economic drivers. You independently solve several high-value analytical problems and establish credibility with senior leadership.
**Six months.** Leadership begins coming to you not merely for numbers, but for: "Help me understand what's happening here." You proactively surface important exceptions, patterns, and insights.
**Twelve months.** You have helped create a repeatable organisational capability for moving from Data > Analysis > Insight > Decision, and reduced the analytical heavy lifting that currently sits with founders and functional leaders.
---
## Why This Could Be an Unusually Good Career Opportunity
This role sits close to the Founder & CEO and senior leadership team. You will see how a rapidly scaling company actually works: how strategic decisions get made, how growth and profitability trade off, how functions interact, how capital gets allocated, how operational constraints emerge, and what happens after the decision is made.
The environment will not always be neat. There will be ambiguity, incomplete data, strong opinions, and problems nobody has solved before.
For the right person, this role can become a bridge from being an analyst of the business to becoming someone who helps shape the business.
---
## How We Will Evaluate You
We will not select primarily on pedigree, certifications, or familiarity with our industry.
Our process is designed to understand: Can you think? Have you demonstrated that thinking in the real world? Can you apply it to unfamiliar business problems? Can you communicate it clearly to senior leaders?
The process includes an analytical thinking assessment, a practical business case, and a deeper conversation about problems you have personally solved in your career.
---
## The Person We Are Looking For
You may be a data analyst who has become increasingly interested in the business behind the numbers. You may be a consultant who wants to move from advising companies to being inside the problem. You may be a strategy professional who wants to become more analytically rigorous. You may be a product, growth, or operations professional who has discovered that your strongest skill is figuring out why things happen. Or you may have an unconventional background entirely.
The common thread is: you are unusually curious about how things work. You do not stop at "What happened?" You want to know "Why?" And then "So what?" And eventually "What should we do about it?"
**If that sounds like you, we would like to hear from you.**
Only Mumbai based candidates apply.
