Your future team: Search Platform

We are looking for a Backend Software Engineer to join the Search Platform team (Core Index Serving). In this role, you will build and operate reliable, high-performance, and scalable backend services that power core search retrieval and index-serving infrastructure across Atlassian products.

In This Role, You Will

Build and ship features, services, and indexing/serving capabilities in a highly scalable, distributed cloud environment.Collaborate closely with engineers, architects, and product managers to solve backend scalability and performance challenges.Review code with best practices in mind, focusing on reliability, code readability, testing patterns, security, and low-latency performance.Ensure full observability, error tracking, and metrics monitoring for high-throughput backend services.Participate actively in Agile rituals, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, retrospectives, and technical design discussions.Support teammates through knowledge sharing and collaborative problem solving.

Qualifications

Your background:

1–3+ years of professional experience designing, building, and operating backend systems and microservices.Proficiency in modern programming languages commonly used for backend/systems development (e.g., Java, Kotlin, Go, Scala, or Python).Experience with distributed systems and APIs, including designing performant, scalable RESTful services.Experience with data stores, including search systems (e.g. OpenSearch), relational databases (e.g., Postgres) and/or NoSQL / distributed storage systems.Familiarity with cloud platforms and architecture (e.g., AWS) and modern CI/CD deployment pipelines.Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science (or equivalent practical experience).Strong communication, collaborative mindset, and commitment to software engineering quality.
