Full job description

About Chargebee:Chargebee is a subscription billing and revenue management platform powering some of the fastest-growing brands around the world today, including Calendly, Hopin, Pret-a-Manger, Freshworks, Okta, Study.com and others. Thousands of SaaS and subscription-first businesses process over billions of dollars in revenue every year through the Chargebee platform.Headquartered in San Francisco, USA, our 500+ team members work remotely throughout the world, including India, the Netherlands, Paris, Spain, Australia, and the USA.Chargebee has raised over $480 million in capital and is funded by Accel, Tiger Global, Insight Partners, Steadview Capital, and Sapphire Ventures. And we’re on a mission to push the boundaries of subscription revenue operations. Not just ours, but every customer and prospective business on a recurring revenue model.

Overview the roleYou'll lead engineering on Hosted Pages — the checkout, customer portal, and pricing surfaces where our customers' subscribers experience our platform firsthand. Like the rest of the team, you don't distinguish between frontend and backend: you're polyglot and pragmatic, fluent in CSS, TypeScript, Node, React, and Vue, with strong Java fundamentals and Spring Boot as a mandatory baseline — API design, thread management, async job execution, queues — applied to Chargebee's actual scale and reliability needs, not textbook cases. You reach for whatever technology solves the customer's problem best.

You hold code quality as non-negotiable: clean, SOLID, testable systems built on strong interfaces and abstractions. That discipline matters more, not less, in an AI-assisted coding world — you set the bar for what "production-ready" means and hold the team to it. UX is where you obsess most: you recognize good patterns instantly and can trace exactly what's broken in a bad one, because you treat good design as intentional and sweat the details others miss. Hands-on experience building UI and working with a design language system is a strong asset — understanding design fundamentals makes you a sharper partner to design, not just an implementer of their specs. You think and design in systems by default, but scope that instinct to what the problem needs — architecture here is justified by customer and business outcomes, efficiency, and non-functional requirements, never built because you can. Customer centricity, empathy, bias for action, and curiosity are the operating principles behind every decision you make.

As a Lead, that scope extends beyond your own code: you decompose ambiguous, multi-component problems into shippable milestones, make significant refactors to legacy systems when warranted, teach code review as a discipline rather than a checkbox, and own the observability and reliability of what your team ships. You influence the roadmap rather than just executing it, and help grow the engineering organization itself — including through hiring.

Location & Work CultureYou'll be based out of Bangalore, working alongside the rest of the Hosted Pages engineering team, with collaborators and leaders in US time zones as well. Chargebee's work culture is hybrid: the team meets in the office three days a week, with the remaining two days working from the office or wherever suits you.

What You'll DoLead engineering across Hosted Pages' full stack — checkout, customer portal, and pricing/subscription-management surfaces — equally hands-on in TypeScript/React/Vue and Java/Spring BootDecompose ambiguous, multi-component problems spanning frontend, backend, and infra into shippable milestones, and drive them to completionDesign and own APIs, thread management, async job execution, and queue-based systems that hold up at Chargebee's scale, with a clear point of view on when solutions earn their complexity and when they don'tSet the bar for UX quality — spot bad patterns early, partner deeply with design and product, and put your design-system fluency to use catching issues before they reach engineeringMake significant refactors to legacy code when justified, and lead code review as a teaching discipline, not a gateOwn the observability, reliability, and maintainability of what your team ships — instrumentation, alerting, dashboardsDrive collaboration across teams that touch Hosted Pages, and take responsibility for fixes beyond your immediate module when dependencies demand itInfluence the roadmap for Hosted Pages, and grow the engineering organization through mentoring and active involvement in hiring

What You Should HaveTechnical LeadershipProven track record independently decomposing ambiguous, multi-component problems into shippable milestonesExperience leading code review as a teaching discipline, and mentoring engineers across frontend and backendSets the testing standard for the team — unit, functional, e2e, and performance tests — and pushes for code coverage that reflects real risk coverage, not just a number to hitTrack record of making significant, well-justified refactors to legacy systemsComfort driving cross-team collaboration, particularly with teams touching billing, payments, and subscriptionsLeading cross-team architectural initiatives, influencing senior engineers and engineering leaders without relying on direct reporting authority.

Technical Expertise7–10 years of experience, with a demonstrated ability to work fluidly across frontend and backend rather than specializing in oneDeep proficiency in CSS, TypeScript, React, Vue, and NodeStrong Java fundamentals with Spring Boot experience — mandatory — with expert-level comfort in API design, thread management, async job execution, and queue-based systems at scaleOwnership of observability, reliability, and maintainability practices — instrumentation, alerting, dashboardsRelational database expertise, including indexing strategy and query optimization at scaleEdge caching strategy for high-traffic, latency-sensitive surfacesOwnership-level experience with server-side rendering and page-performance optimization — sub-second loads, strong Core Web Vitals (LCP, FCP, and similar)Strong command of responsive UI design across devicesDeep familiarity with observability platforms (Sentry, Datadog, Splunk) — building the dashboards, trend monitoring, and alerting the rest of the team relies on (this backs the existing "own observability, reliability, and maintainability" bullet in What You'll Do)

Product & UX SenseA trained eye for UX — spots good patterns instantly and can trace exactly what's broken in bad onesHands-on experience building UI in Figma or working within a design language system is a strong plusTreats good design as intentional and holds a high bar for detail across the team, not just personallyAI-Assisted Engineering PracticesUses AI tools strategically to accelerate delivery while maintaining rigor, and catches subtle errors in AI-generated codeWrites precise, consistent prompts and mentors others on effective AI-assisted workflowsNice to HaveStrong working knowledge of the billing & subscriptions domainExperience with high-traffic checkout, payments, or subscription-management systems at scaleA point of view on where AI is heading in commerce — concepts like agentic checkout are a plus
