The Role: Software Engineer III – Rust + Java

We're looking for an experienced Software Engineer III with strong hands-on expertise in Rust and Java to build scalable, high-performance, and reliable backend systems that power Upstox's investing platform.

You'll work on critical backend services, solve complex engineering challenges, and contribute to building robust and efficient systems. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working on distributed systems, performance optimization, and backend architecture.

What You'll Own

Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Rust and JavaBuild high-performance, reliable, and low-latency systems for financial applicationsDevelop and optimize APIs, microservices, and distributed system componentsWrite clean, maintainable, testable, and efficient codeIdentify and resolve performance bottlenecks, production issues, and system reliability challengesWork with databases, messaging systems, and caching layers to build robust backend infrastructureParticipate in system design discussions, code reviews, and architectural decisionsCollaborate with Product, QA, DevOps, and engineering teams to deliver high-quality solutionsImprove system observability, scalability, and production stabilityTake ownership of technical deliverables and contribute to engineering best practices

What We're Looking For

6–10 years of experience in software development and backend engineeringStrong hands-on experience with Rust and JavaStrong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design principlesExperience building scalable backend services, APIs, and microservicesGood understanding of distributed systems, concurrency, multithreading, and asynchronous programmingExperience with relational and/or NoSQL databases, data modeling, and query optimizationFamiliarity with messaging systems, caching mechanisms, and performance optimizationExperience with Git, automated testing, CI/CD, and software development best practicesStrong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skillsAbility to independently own complex technical deliverables and collaborate effectively across teamsExperience with Kafka or similar messaging platforms

Good to Have

Experience in fintech, stock broking, trading, or financial servicesExposure to high-throughput, low-latency systems and real-time data processingFamiliarity with cloud platforms, Docker, and KubernetesUnderstanding of order management, transaction processing, or financial market systemsExperience with observability, monitoring, and production incident management
