Senior Software Engineer AWS IoT

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Connectivity Platform Development

Design, develop and maintain scalable AWS-based IoT services and applications. Build secure and reliable backend services and APIs using Python. Develop cloud-native solutions supporting device onboarding, provisioning, registration, telemetry ingestion, alarm processing, software distribution, file transfer and remote service capabilities. Contribute to architecture decisions and technology roadmaps for Bayer’s connectivity platform. Ensure solutions are secure, scalable, reliable, maintainable, and compliant with organizational quality standards. Support the strategic transition from existing connectivity platforms such as ThingWorx toward cloud-native AWS IoT-based connectivity solutions.

Backend Engineering and API Development

Design and develop backend services, APIs, and integration components using Python. Build services that support device communication, telemetry processing, alarm handling, file movement, remote service workflows, and platform integrations. Design REST APIs and service contracts for integration between cloud services, device software and enterprise applications. Contribute to microservices architecture, event-driven design and distributed application patterns. Ensure backend services are testable, observable, maintainable, and suitable for regulated product development environments.

Device Connectivity and Integration

Collaborate closely with Device Software teams to integrate medical devices with cloud-based connectivity services. Define and implement secure communication mechanisms including MQTT, HTTPS, TLS, and certificate-based authentication. Support secure device onboarding, registration, identity management and lifecycle management. Drive integration testing across cloud services, device software, and enterprise applications. Assist in defining communication contracts, APIs, and integration patterns between connected devices and cloud services. Troubleshoot device-to-cloud connectivity issues across application, network, authentication and cloud service layers.

Cloud Engineering and AWS Platform Services

Develop and maintain services leveraging AWS IoT Core and related AWS services. Implement Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and CloudFormation. Support cloud deployments across development, validation, and production environments. Configure and maintain cloud resources required for scalable, secure, and reliable IoT platform operations. Monitor platform performance, availability, scalability, and operational health. Optimize platform services for reliability, maintainability, security, and cost efficiency.

Troubleshooting and Operational Support

Serve as a technical escalation point for complex platform and connectivity-related issues. Perform deep troubleshooting across cloud infrastructure, backend services, APIs, networking, authentication, connectivity workflows, and device communication layers. Conduct root cause investigations and drive corrective and preventive actions. Support production environments and contribute to continuous operational improvement. Develop and improve monitoring, logging, alerting, and observability capabilities. Support incident management, problem management, and operational readiness activities. Maintain strong ownership of issues from identification through resolution.

Agile Delivery and Release Management

Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, estimation, and Agile development ceremonies. Collaborate with Product Owners, architects and stakeholders to define and prioritize platform capabilities. Support release planning, deployment readiness, release coordination, and change management activities. Contribute to delivery planning across development, validation and production release cycles. Ensure delivery commitments are met while maintaining high quality, security, and compliance standards. Work with global teams to coordinate dependencies across cloud, device software, quality, cybersecurity, and operations.

Security, Quality and Compliance

Apply cybersecurity best practices throughout the software development lifecycle. Support operation and maintenance of solutions within regulated and GxP-compliant environments. Collaborate with Quality, Regulatory Affairs and Cybersecurity teams to support compliance, validation and audit-related activities. Support secure software development practices, vulnerability remediation, encryption, identity management, and certificate handling. Contribute to technical documentation, architecture documentation, operational procedures and engineering best practices. Ensure solutions are developed and maintained in alignment with healthcare technology, quality and cybersecurity expectations.

UI and Cross-Technology Collaboration

Work effectively with teams responsible for user-facing applications and platform interfaces. Maintain a basic understanding of UI and front-end technologies such as Node.js and React.js. Contribute to technical discussions involving APIs, front-end integration, workflow behavior, and user-facing connectivity capabilities. Collaborate across backend, cloud, device software and UI layers to support end-to-end platform delivery.

Collaboration and Engineering Excellence

Work within global cross-functional teams across R&D, Device Software, Service, Product, Quality, Regulatory, Cybersecurity and Operations. Communicate technical topics clearly to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders. Mentor junior engineers and actively contribute to knowledge sharing within the team. Promote engineering discipline, maintainability, documentation, and operational excellence. Contribute to a high-performing engineering culture aligned with Bayer’s Dynamic Shared Ownership model.

WHO YOU ARE:

Education

Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics Engineering, or related technical discipline.

Experience

5 to 7+ years of professional software engineering, cloud engineering, connectivity platform, or related technology experience. Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience developing solutions on AWS. Strong experience building backend applications, services and APIs using Python. Experience developing cloud-native applications and distributed systems. Hands-on experience with AWS IoT Core and related AWS services. Experience working with REST APIs, microservices, and integration architectures. Experience with MQTT, HTTPS, TLS, certificate management, and secure communication protocols. Experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and/or CloudFormation. Experience working with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices. Experience operating and supporting production systems. Experience working within Agile product development environments. Experience supporting release planning, deployment of readiness, release coordination, and change management activities. Experience performing deep troubleshooting across cloud, application, networking, authentication and device communication layers. Experience in Medical Devices, MedTech, Healthcare, Software as a Medical Device, Life Sciences, or another regulated industry. Experience maintaining or supporting systems operating within GxP environments. Experience supporting connected products, connected medical devices, cloud-based connectivity platforms, or IoT platforms. Experience with remote service, remote monitoring, software distribution, file transfer, alarm processing, event management, or similar connected device workflows. Experience working with globally distributed product development or engineering teams.

Domain and Business Acumen

Strong understanding of cloud-based connectivity platforms and connected product architectures. Understanding secure device onboarding, provisioning, registration, telemetry ingestion, alarm processing, software distribution, file transfer and remote service workflows. Ability to work across cloud services, backend services, device software integrations and operational environments. Good understanding of regulated software development environments, including quality, validation, documentation, change control, and operational compliance expectations. Basic understanding of UI concepts and technologies such as Node.js and React.js. Familiarity with healthcare technology, connected medical devices, digital health software, or medical device software development. Ability to understand end-to-end workflows spanning device software, cloud connectivity, backend services, APIs, operations and user-facing applications.

Technical Execution

Strong hands-on engineering skills with the ability to design, build, troubleshoot and operate platform capabilities. Ability to work independently and take ownership of technical deliverables. Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving capabilities. Ability to contribute to architecture discussions, design reviews, and technical decision-making. Ability to balance delivery speed, quality, security, compliance, and operational reliability. Ability to support production issues with a structured troubleshooting mindset and strong ownership from identification through resolution. Ability to develop and maintain solutions suitable for regulated product development and GxP operational environments.
