The role

A backend developer at an e-commerce retail product company designs scalable Python services and integrates Generative AI into production systems, using REST APIs and microservices. The role applies distributed systems and cloud-native engineering to build reliable, observable backend platforms and agentic workflows.

Full job description

As a Senior Python Developer (L6), you will play a key role in designing and building scalable backend platforms while driving the adoption of Generative AI, LLMs, and agentic workflows across engineering solutions. This is a hands-on senior engineering role requiring strong expertise in Python, backend architecture, distributed systems, API design, and cloud-native engineering, combined with practical experience integrating modern AI capabilities into production systems. You will work closely with Product, Data, AI/ML, and DevOps teams to translate complex business requirements into reliable, scalable, and observable engineering solutions.

Responsibilities:

Architect and develop secure, scalable, and highly available backend systems using Python.

Drive HLD/LLD, system design, API architecture, modularity, fault tolerance, and scalability across backend services.

Design and build REST APIs and microservices using Python frameworks such as FastAPI.

Integrate LLMs and Generative AI capabilities into production applications and backend workflows.

Build reliable AI-powered systems with appropriate mechanisms to reduce hallucinations, improve reliability, and ensure predictable outputs.

Design and implement agentic workflows and AI-driven automation for business and engineering use cases.

Work hands-on with the OpenAI developer ecosystem, including APIs such as Completions, Responses, and Files, along with tools/SDKs such as Agents SDK and Web Search.

Implement and improve AI agent debugging, tracing, evaluation, and monitoring using platforms such as Phoenix, LangSmith, or similar tools.

Design and optimise integrations with PostgreSQL and other data stores supporting real-time and batch workloads.

Build and integrate data pipelines and ETL workflows, including movement of data between cloud platforms such as GCP and PostgreSQL.

Drive performance optimisation, reliability, observability, logging, monitoring, and alerting across backend services.

Establish engineering standards around code quality, testing, code reviews, and maintainability.

Develop comprehensive unit, integration, and functional test suites for high-reliability systems.

Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines supporting automated testing, deployments, rollback, and production health.

Partner with Product, Data, Business, AI/ML, and DevOps teams to deliver scalable solutions.

Mentor engineers, conduct technical reviews, and contribute to a culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement.

Stay current with emerging GenAI, LLM, agentic AI, and developer productivity technologies and identify opportunities to apply them effectively.

Requirements:

8-12 years of professional software development experience, with strong hands-on experience in Python.

Expert-level proficiency in Python and strong experience with backend frameworks such as FastAPI.

Proven experience designing and building large-scale backend systems, REST APIs, and microservices.

Strong understanding of system design, distributed systems, scalability, fault tolerance, and performance optimisation.

Hands-on experience with LLMs, Generative AI, AI integrations, and agentic workflows in production or real-world applications.

Practical experience with the OpenAI developer ecosystem, including APIs, SDKs, and AI tooling.

Experience with AI observability/debugging platforms such as Phoenix, LangSmith, or equivalent.

Strong experience working with PostgreSQL and other relational/non-relational databases.

Experience with data pipelines, ETL processes, and batch/real-time data workflows.

Strong understanding of automated testing, code quality, observability, logging, monitoring, and alerting.

Hands-on experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.

Experience working with cloud platforms, preferably GCP, and cloud-native architectures.

Strong understanding of API security, authentication, authorisation, and backend security best practices.

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to make sound technical decisions.

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Ability to mentor engineers and influence technical decisions across teams.
