The role

A frontend engineer at an ecommerce marketplace builds customer-facing web interfaces and delivers frontend development. The role focuses on frontend development.

Full job description

Responsibilities:

Design, build, and maintain scalable React-based interfaces for core consumer journeys (discovery, cart, checkout, order tracking), supporting millions of monthly active users.

Drive frontend performance optimisation initiatives, targeting measurable improvements such as sub-2-second Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and Core Web Vitals scores in the Good range.

Own end-to-end delivery of features from technical design through production rollout, maintaining a sprint velocity and release cadence aligned with product roadmap commitments.

Collaborate with Product and Design teams to translate business requirements and Figma prototypes into pixel-accurate, responsive, cross-browser UI.

Write clean, well-tested, and maintainable TypeScript/JavaScript code, maintaining or improving unit and integration test coverage (target: 80%+ on new code).

Partner with Backend Engineering to define efficient API contracts, reducing payload size and round-trip latency for high-traffic endpoints.

Champion frontend architecture decisions (state management, component design, module boundaries) that keep the codebase scalable as the product grows.

Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, pairing, and design discussions, raising overall team code quality.

Monitor production frontend health using RUM/APM tooling, triaging and resolving client-side incidents within defined SLAs.

Contribute to accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA) and internationalisation efforts to broaden product reach across user segments.

Requirements:

Experience: 3-5+ years of professional frontend engineering experience, with a strong track record shipping consumer-facing products at scale.

Strong proficiency in React (hooks, component lifecycle, context API, performance patterns like memoisation and code-splitting).

Solid working knowledge of TypeScript, including generics, type narrowing, and interface design for large codebases.

Deep understanding of modern JavaScript (ES2020+): async/await, closures, event loop, module systems.

Strong command of semantic HTML5 and CSS3 including responsive design, Flexbox/Grid, and cross-browser compatibility.

Hands-on experience with frontend testing frameworks (e. g., Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress or Playwright) and a habit of writing tests alongside features.

Comfort working with REST/GraphQL APIs, browser dev tools, and version control (Git) in a collaborative, code-review-driven workflow.

Preferred (not mandatory):

Experience with state management libraries such as Redux, Zustand, or Recoil.

Experience with Next.js or other React-based SSR/SSG frameworks.

Demonstrated experience in web performance optimisation (bundle analysis, lazy loading, caching strategies, Core Web Vitals).

Working knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and assistive-technology testing.

Nice-to-Have:

Experience building or maintaining a design system/component library used across multiple product teams.

Exposure to native app technologies (React Native) or hybrid web-app architectures.

Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, feature-flagging systems, and A/B testing frameworks.

Experience with observability tooling (e. g., Datadog, New Relic, Sentry) for frontend monitoring.

Prior experience in food-tech, e-commerce, logistics, or other high-throughput consumer platforms.

Open-source contributions or public technical writing on frontend engineering topics.
