The role

An engineering manager at an e-commerce marketplace leads database platform engineering, building backend systems with Java and Python and scaling distributed systems. The role drives database automation and self-service platform capabilities while improving reliability and developer experience across engineering teams.

Full job description

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Database Platform Team at Meesho. In this role, you will be responsible for building and growing a high-impact platform engineering team, owning the technical roadmap, and delivering a unified database platform used by hundreds of engineers across Meesho. This is not a pure operations role but rather a platform engineering leadership role that blends system design, automation, developer experience, and reliability. You will work closely with the backend, data, infra, and SRE teams to ensure Meesho's database ecosystem scales reliably while remaining easy to use and cost-efficient.

Responsibilities:

Lead and grow a team of engineers building Meesho's Database Platform.

Own the platform roadmap for database provisioning, scaling, upgrades, client-side interaction with DBs, observability, automation, and modernizing the overall database landscape.

Drive the shift from manual operations to self-service and intent-based workflows.

Partner with product and engineering teams to understand requirements and translate them into platform capabilities.

Ensure high standards of reliability, availability, security, and performance across database systems.

Establish strong engineering practices around design reviews, code quality, and operational excellence.

Mentor engineers, conduct regular 1:1s, and build a culture of ownership and continuous learning.

Collaborate with SRE and Infra teams and leverage AI to reduce toil and improve incident resilience.

Requirements:

8+ years of experience in software engineering, with 1+ years in an engineering management role.

Strong background in platform, backend, or infrastructure engineering.

Experience building backend systems in Java and/or Python.

Hands-on understanding of relational and/or NoSQL databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, Scylla, Elastic, etc. ).

Solid grasp of distributed systems, scalability, high availability, and fault tolerance.

Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS or GCP).

Ability to drive execution via OKRs, sprint planning, and prioritization.

Strong communication skills and the ability to work across multiple teams.

Good to Have:

Experience with database automation, provisioning systems, or internal developer platforms.

Exposure to Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD, or Infrastructure as Code.

Experience working with high-scale, high-traffic production systems.

Interest in cost optimization and performance engineering.

Prior experience working closely with SRE or Infra teams.

Exposure with data pipelines and messaging systems (Kafka).
