We are hiring a Control Operations Lead - DMS within Data Management Services (part of Data & Analytics Office)

The Data function owns the bank’s data controls and the ecosystem that allows every business to implement them. Our vision is a self-serve, automated route to meeting data control standards and delivering consistent, high-quality data outcomes across HSBC.

The Control Operations Lead – DMS, leads the team responsible for implementing and operating data controls across business areas, in line with standards and designs set by the Data Design team. The role ensures controls are executed consistently, outcomes are evidenced to the required standard, and control performance is continuously improved through disciplined operational management.

The role owns the operational management of exceptions, ensuring issues are identified, triaged, investigated, resolved and closed in partnership with business and business-aligned data teams.

Success depends on building and sustaining strong, outcome-focused partnerships with key stakeholders across CIO areas, CDAO teams, Businesses, CCO and Risk to enable control implementation at pace, manage interdependencies, and ensure consistent adoption of control standards.

Governance and Committee Memberships

The jobholder will continually reassess the operational risks associated with the role and inherent in the business, taking account of changing economic or market conditions, legal and regulatory requirements, operating procedures and practices, management restructurings, and the impact of new technology. The jobholder will also adhere to and be able to demonstrate adherence to internal controls. This will be achieved by adherence to all relevant procedures, keeping appropriate records and, where appropriate, by the timely implementation of internal and external audit points, including issues raised by external regulators. The jobholder will implement the Group compliance policy by containing compliance risk in liaison with Global Head of Compliance, Global Compliance Officer, Area Compliance Officer or Local Compliance Officer. The term ‘compliance’ embraces all relevant financial services laws, rules and codes with which the business has to comply.

In This Role, You Will

Lead end-to-end delivery of data control implementation and day-to-day operation across business areas, ensuring adherence to agreed standards, timelines and outcomes. Translate control designs from the Data Design team into operational processes, procedures and run-books that are executable, repeatable and auditable at scale. Drive consistent control execution across all operating locations, ensuring a single operating model with aligned quality standards, terminology, escalation routes and handovers. Ensure evidence and artefacts produced through control execution are complete, reproducible and meet requirements for Internal Audit, external audit and regulatory review. Own control performance management (MI, KPIs, control effectiveness measures), identifying themes, risks and opportunities, and driving continuous improvement. Establish and operate exception management (intake, triage, prioritisation, investigation, resolution and closure), ensuring clear ownership and timely remediation. Partner with Data Technology / Engineering and Product teams to shape tooling and workflow enhancements, using operational insight and effort data to prioritise improvements. Lead, develop and retain a high-performing semi-technical operations team; uplift capability across data governance, investigation, tooling fluency and operational discipline. Proactively identify and manage operational risk within the function, ensuring adherence to internal controls, policy requirements and timely closure of audit and regulatory findings. Lead a semi-technical, multi-geography team, ensuring consistent execution standards and shared ways of working across sites. Build a culture of ownership, operational excellence, transparency and learning; make it safe to surface issues early and solve them fast. Work collaboratively with CIO areas, CDAO teams, Businesses, CCO and Risk to deliver shared outcomes and maintain a strong control environment. Strengthen cross-boundary teamwork with Data Design, Data Policy, Data Technology and Engineering, and broader transformation teams.

To Be Successful You Will

Strong knowledge of data governance and data management (data quality, metadata, lineage, ownership, classification, privacy and retention) and their application in a regulated environment. Proven operations leadership capability: service management, run-book discipline, capacity planning, quality assurance, and continuous improvement. Technical credibility to engage effectively with engineers and data platform teams; ability to interrogate data, understand datasets, and work with SQL / query-based investigation (to an appropriate senior level). Strong audit and control mindset with experience preparing evidence and responding to audit / regulatory queries. Advanced stakeholder management and influencing skills, including delivery through matrixed organisations where formal authority is limited. 15+ years’ experience in data operations, data governance, controls, risk and/or technology operations within financial services or similarly regulated environments. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a recognised university. Demonstrated success leading large teams, including managing managers, across multiple locations. Track record of delivering complex, cross-functional outcomes under challenging timelines while maintaining control quality and colleague wellbeing. Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to present complex operational issues clearly to senior stakeholders and committees.
