The role

A backend engineer at a financial services platform builds correctness-critical Java and Spring Boot microservices for billing-account systems, designing event-driven workflows and transactional consistency across distributed services. The role also applies GraphQL, JPA/Hibernate, and Datadog to integrate external platforms and deliver reliable production changes.

Full job description

Job Description

We are seeking a hands-on Senior Backend Software Engineer to build and evolve correctness-critical financial services. This role focuses on production Java and Spring Boot 3 microservices that keep billing-account data accurate, compliant, reliable, and synchronized across distributed services, multiple datastores, and external platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Enterprise experience strongly preferred.

Develop and maintain production Java and Spring Boot services. Deliver features, bug fixes, and reliability improvements across distributed backend systems. Design reliable event-driven workflows with safe retry and idempotency behavior. Solve transactional-consistency, concurrency, and notification-reliability problems at scale. Design and execute safe entity and database-schema migrations. Integrate backend services with external REST- or SDK-based platforms. Maintain accurate and compliant billing-account state across relational and non-relational datastores. Write unit and integration tests that meet established coverage and quality gates. Deliver production-ready changes through GitLab CI/CD pipelines. Improve observability, resilience, and deployment safety through Datadog monitors and canary practices. Use AI coding assistants responsibly while independently validating code quality and correctness.

Qualifications

Must-Have Skills

5+ years of hands-on backend engineering experience with Java and Spring Boot 3. Demonstrated ownership of production microservices in a distributed-systems environment. GraphQL experience through either building APIs with Netflix DGS or consuming them with the Apollo Java or Kotlin client. Hands-on production experience with at least one of AWS SQS, Apache Kafka, or RabbitMQ. Demonstrated experience designing idempotent event handlers. Strong JPA/Hibernate and Spring Data JPA experience with MySQL or Aurora. Hands-on transactional-design and optimistic-locking experience. Experience writing JPA entities and managing schema migrations against a production MySQL or Aurora database. Proficiency with JUnit 5 and Mockito for unit testing. Experience writing integration tests against live environments. Experience with Gradle multi-module builds. Experience with GitLab CI/CD pipelines. Experience using Datadog metrics and monitors. Experience using Datadog monitors as deployment quality gates in a CI/CD pipeline. Experience integrating with an external REST- or SDK-based third-party platform. Responsible use of AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot or Claude, with independent review and validation of output.

Nice-to-Have Skills

Prior experience in Billing or Payments. Experience with DynamoDB using AWS SDK v2. Experience with MongoDB using Spring Data. Experience working across multiple datastores in one architecture. Experience with Netflix DGS. Experience integrating with Zuora or a comparable billing platform.
